Almost every piece of real gold jewelry is marked with a tiny hallmark that indicates the gold content:<\/p><ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>585 = 14K (58.5% pure gold)<\/li><li>750 = 18K (75% pure gold)<\/li><li>375 = 9K (37.5% pure gold)<\/li><li>999 = 24K (pure gold)<\/li><\/ul><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The hallmark is usually stamped in an inconspicuous place, such as the inside of a ring, the clasp of a necklace, or the back of an earring. Always look for the numeric marking (585, 750, etc.).<\/p><h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Magnet Test<\/h2><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Real gold is not attracted to a magnet. Bring a strong magnet close to the jewelry: if it&#8217;s attracted, it&#8217;s a clear sign that it&#8217;s a magnetic alloy plated with gold, not solid gold.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> The test isn&#8217;t foolproof\u2014even plated jewelry on a non-magnetic base metal (such as copper or nickel) won&#8217;t react. Divide the weight by the volume to get the density.<\/p><p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pure gold has a density of about 19.3 g\/cm\u00b3, 14K around 13, and 18K around 15.5.
